Terms of Sale and End User Licence Agreement (EULA)

This summary highlights important parts of the Terms of Sale and EULA. It is for convenience only and does not replace the full terms below. If a specific right, risk, licence rule, refund, platform feature, or workflow matters to you, read the full terms before purchasing or using GetCompress.

  • GetCompress is licensed, not sold. Unless your order says otherwise, one licence is for one individual user, and organisations need enough licences for the people who use it.
  • You may request a no-questions-asked refund within 14 days after purchase, in addition to any mandatory consumer rights you may have.
  • A paid licence includes one year of free updates. After that, you may continue using the last version available to you before the update period expired.
  • Ordinary media processing is designed to happen locally on your computer, but the app may connect online for licensing, updates, dependencies, support, optional diagnostics, and crash reporting.
  • Compression, conversion, automation, folder monitoring, clipboard workflows, extensions, scripts, and integrations can affect files. Keep backups and test important workflows on copies.
  • Output quality, file size, metadata handling, format support, feature availability, and performance can vary by file, settings, operating system, codecs, dependencies, version, and hardware.
  • Do not share licence keys, bypass licensing controls, redistribute GetCompress, misuse automation servers, use it unlawfully, or process files you do not have the right to process.
  • Nothing in the terms limits rights or liability that cannot legally be limited.

1. Agreement

These Terms of Sale and End User Licence Agreement (“Terms”) are a legal agreement between you and Night Story for GetCompress, including the GetCompress website, checkout, desktop app, licence keys, purchases, refunds, updates, documentation, support, licensing services, and related online services.

By accessing the GetCompress website, making a purchase, downloading, installing, activating, updating or using GetCompress, you agree to these Terms.

If you do not agree to these Terms, do not purchase, install, or use GetCompress.

These Terms are designed to protect both sides while recognising the nature of media compression software: outputs depend on source files, settings, codecs, operating systems, third-party components, and user choices.

2. Other documents

The following documents also apply:

  • GetCompress Privacy Notice — how we handle personal data.
  • Open-source notices — licences for open-source components included with or used by GetCompress.
  • Order page or invoice — the price, currency, tax treatment, licence quantity, and any special purchase terms shown at checkout.

If documents conflict, the following order applies unless a written agreement signed by Night Story says otherwise:

  1. a written agreement signed by Night Story;
  2. your order page or invoice;
  3. these Terms;
  4. documentation and website descriptions.

3. Product description

GetCompress is a desktop app for local media compression, conversion, optimisation, previewing, and automation. It is designed for macOS, Windows, and Linux.

GetCompress can work with many media types and formats, including images, video, GIFs, PDFs, and audio-only conversions. Exact format support, performance, compression ratio, output size, visual quality, metadata handling, and compatibility may vary by file, settings, operating system, app version, codecs, libraries, extensions, and hardware.

GetCompress is not a backup system, archival guarantee, professional legal compliance tool, medical device, safety-critical system, or a guarantee that any file will be accepted by any platform, client, website, app store, or third-party service.

Feature availability and platform differences

GetCompress features may vary by operating system, app version, device type, CPU architecture, package format, permissions, dependency availability, and local configuration.

Product pages, pricing pages, screenshots, videos, demos, feature summaries, blog posts, release notes, and other marketing materials may describe features that are available only on some platforms or in some versions. This can include Finder Services, Raycast, Siri Shortcuts, clipboard workflows, folder monitoring, quick dropzones, local automation servers, MCP features, app integrations, media formats, codecs, extensions, and similar features.

The current and more complete feature and platform information is available in the GetCompress documentation . You should review the documentation before purchasing if a specific feature, platform, operating system version, integration, format, codec, or workflow matters to you.

Except where applicable law gives you mandatory rights, website descriptions and marketing materials do not promise feature parity across platforms or versions and do not guarantee that a feature will remain available, unchanged, or compatible with every future operating system, device, dependency, or third-party service.

Website and online services

The GetCompress website is provided for product information, purchases, downloads, documentation, support, legal notices and related communications.

You may use the website only for lawful purposes and in accordance with these Terms. You must not misuse the website, interfere with its security or availability, scrape it in a way that imposes unreasonable load, attempt to bypass access controls, introduce malware, or use it to infringe rights or harm Night Story, users or third parties.

We may update, suspend, restrict or discontinue any part of the website, checkout, documentation, download links, support channels or related online services at any time, subject to any mandatory rights you have under applicable law.

Website content is provided for general product information only. It is not legal, financial, professional, technical or security advice. Product descriptions, screenshots, performance claims, feature lists and roadmap statements may change, and they do not override these Terms, your order page or mandatory consumer rights.

The website may link to third-party websites, payment providers, marketplaces, documentation, open-source projects or integrations. We are not responsible for third-party websites or services that we do not control.

The English version of GetCompress legal terms, documentation, technical notices, product information, warnings, and support communications is the original version. Localised app or website text may be incomplete, outdated, inaccurate, or different from the English original. For important legal, purchase, safety, security, technical, platform, feature, or support decisions, you should rely on the English original unless applicable law requires otherwise.

4. Purchase, price, and taxes

Current pricing is shown on the order page before purchase.

Your order page controls the final price, currency, taxes, discounts, licence quantity, and payment provider terms. Prices may change in the future. Price changes do not affect licences you have already bought.

You are responsible for any taxes, duties, exchange fees, bank fees, or payment provider charges that apply to your purchase, except where our payment provider collects them from you at checkout.

Payment processing is handled by Polar.sh , you may contact them at support@polar.sh . We do not store or get access to full card numbers.

5. Refunds

You may request a no-questions-asked refund within 14 days after your purchase.

To request a refund, contact support@getcompress.com with the email address used for the order and, if available, your order ID. Refunds are normally made through the original payment provider and payment method.

After a refund is processed, we may disable the refunded licence key and your right to use paid versions of GetCompress.

This refund policy is voluntary and does not limit any mandatory rights you may have under applicable consumer law, including rights relating to digital content that is faulty, not as described, or not of satisfactory quality.

6. Licence

Subject to these Terms, Night Story grants you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to download, install, and use GetCompress for lawful personal or internal business purposes, subject to termination as described in these Terms.

Unless your order page says otherwise:

  • one licence is for one individual user;
  • that user may install and use GetCompress on a reasonable number of devices that they own or control;
  • your licence may be limited by active activation instances or active devices, as shown at checkout, in product copy, in the app, or in your licence records;
  • organisations must buy enough licences for the people who use GetCompress; and
  • licence keys must not be shared, published, resold, rented, pooled, transferred, or made available to unlicensed users.

GetCompress is licensed, not sold. Night Story and its licensors retain all ownership and intellectual property rights in GetCompress.

7. Updates and continued use

A paid licence includes one year of free updates starting on the purchase date.

When the one-year update period expires, you may continue using the last version of GetCompress that was available to you before the expiry date. You will not be entitled to later updates unless you renew, upgrade, or buy a new update period.

Updates may add, change, or remove features, integrations, extensions, formats, settings, user interface elements, performance characteristics, dependencies, package formats, platform support, or compatibility. We may make changes for security, legal, technical, product, or business reasons.

We do not promise that older versions will remain compatible with future operating systems, hardware, media formats, third-party dependencies, app stores, websites, AI assistants, or services.

8. Support

We aim to provide reasonable support through support@getcompress.com or another channel listed on our website.

Unless a separate written agreement says otherwise, support is provided without a guaranteed response time, service level, uptime commitment, custom development obligation, or obligation to support every file, format, workflow, extension, platform or operating system version.

9. Local processing and privacy

GetCompress is designed so ordinary media compression, conversion, optimisation, and previewing happen locally on your computer. Night Story does NOT require your media files to be uploaded to any servers.

The app may connect to the internet for limited purposes such as licensing, update checks, dependencies and remote configuration downloads, support, optional diagnostics, and crash reporting.

Licence activation labels

Licence activation and validation require online communication with Polar.sh . When you activate GetCompress, the app automatically sends your computer display name to Polar as the activation label so you can identify the activated device, for example in a customer portal or support context.

You are responsible for your computer display name. If you do not want a personal name, company name, location, asset tag, or other identifying text to be sent as the activation label, you should change your computer display name before activating GetCompress where your operating system allows this.

When you deactivate a licence activation, the activation instance may be freed, removed, or no longer associated with the active licence instance where supported by Polar. Payment providers, licensing providers, and other third-party services may retain logs, backups, transaction records, security records, tax records, legal records, or similar records under their own terms and privacy notices.

App diagnostics and crash reporting are designed NOT to send media files, file contents, previews, thumbnails, filenames, full file paths, clipboard contents, your system login name, raw email address, or raw licence key. Diagnostics may include file extension information, general system information, approximate location derived from connection data, random installation identifiers, hashed email addresses, and hashed licence keys or licence identifiers. Diagnostics can be disabled in GetCompress → Settings → General → Analytics.

10. Your files, rights, and responsibilities

You keep all rights you have in your files. Because ordinary processing is local, you do not grant Night Story rights to your media files merely by using GetCompress.

You are responsible for:

  • having the legal right to process, compress, convert, optimise, copy, edit, and distribute the files you use with GetCompress;
  • complying with copyright, trademark, privacy, publicity, confidentiality, export, sanctions, and other laws;
  • choosing suitable settings for your files and intended use;
  • reviewing outputs before publishing, sending, delivering, or relying on them;
  • keeping backups of important files; and
  • using supported operating systems, formats, and workflows.

You must not use GetCompress to process unlawful content, infringe rights, hide infringement, bypass platform rules, distribute malware, or harm any person, system, or service.

11. Backups and file-loss risk

Compression and conversion can be lossy, irreversible, or destructive depending on settings and workflow. Some workflows may overwrite originals, delete originals, replace files, move files, rename files, reduce quality, change or remove metadata, create corrupted outputs, fail part-way through a batch, or automatically process files if you configure them that way.

Risks can also arise from unsupported files, malformed media, automation misconfiguration, watched-folder processing, clipboard processing, custom scripts, extensions, third-party tools, codecs, replaced or custom executable dependencies, operating system behaviour, storage failures, or hardware issues.

You must keep backups of important files, test workflows on copies before processing important files, and verify outputs before deleting originals or using outputs in production.

You use compression, conversion, automation, extensions, scripts, integrations, and output settings at your own risk, except where liability cannot legally be excluded.

GetCompress may contain software imperfections (known as bugs or glitches). Source files may be malformed. Codecs, executable dependencies, and third-party components may fail. Operating systems and storage devices may behave unexpectedly. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Night Story is not responsible for loss that could have been avoided by keeping reasonable backups, reviewing outputs, using supported settings, or following documentation and warnings.

12. Folder monitoring, clipboard automation, and automatic workflows

GetCompress may include folder monitoring, clipboard compression, quick dropzones, local automation, and similar features that process files automatically or semi-automatically.

You are responsible for configuring these features carefully. In particular, you should check watched folders, output destinations, overwrite settings, lossy/lossless settings, target sizes, presets, and whether originals are kept.

Do not enable automatic workflows for important files unless you understand the workflow and have backups.

13. MCP server, local HTTP automation server, and integrations

GetCompress may include an MCP server, embedded local HTTP automation server, Raycast extension, Siri Shortcuts, Finder Services and extensions, notifications, startup actions, AI assistant integrations, or other automation features.

These features are powerful and may allow other tools to trigger file processing. You are responsible for deciding whether to enable them, which tools may connect to them, and what permissions they have.

You must not expose any local automation server to untrusted networks, the public internet, or untrusted users unless you fully understand and accept the security risks. Use operating system permissions, firewalls, authentication settings, and network controls where available.

Night Story is not responsible for actions taken by third-party AI assistants, scripts, extensions, automation tools, users, malware, or services that you connect to GetCompress.

14. Extensions, scripts, and third-party components

GetCompress may use, bundle, download, sideload, launch, inspect, or interoperate with open-source components, media libraries, codecs, executable dependencies, command-line tools, JavaScript extensions, user scripts, custom logic, and third-party integrations.

Some executable dependencies may be distributed under open-source or other third-party licences. Those dependencies may be installed, updated, or stored separately from the main GetCompress app depending on platform, package format, settings, and version.

Where GetCompress provides settings or interfaces to inspect, locate, replace, disable, or customise executable dependencies, you are responsible for any changes you make. Replacing or customising binaries, tools, codecs, libraries, scripts, or extensions may affect security, privacy, legal compliance, reliability, compatibility, support eligibility, output quality, output correctness, and whether workflows work at all.

Third-party or user-created extensions may run code locally, access files, call tools, change outputs, or interact with other services depending on how they are written and configured.

Only install, enable, replace, or write extensions, scripts, binaries, codecs, libraries, and tools that you trust. You are responsible for reviewing their source, permissions, behaviour, licences, origin, integrity, security, and legal compliance.

Night Story is not responsible for third-party extensions, user-created scripts, third-party tools, replaced or custom executable dependencies, unofficial integrations, or outputs caused by them, except to the extent liability cannot be excluded by law.

Open-source components are governed by their own licences. Nothing in these Terms gives you rights in third-party software beyond the relevant third-party licences and applicable law, and nothing in these Terms is intended to restrict rights you receive directly under an applicable open-source licence for a particular component.

15. Restrictions

Except where applicable law gives you a right that cannot be restricted, you must not:

  • copy, distribute, resell, rent, lease, sublicense, lend, publish, or host GetCompress;
  • make GetCompress available as a bureau, SaaS, managed service, public API, or shared service for unlicensed users;
  • share, publish, leak, transfer, sell, rent, pool, or circumvent licence keys, activation mechanisms, active-device limits, activation-instance limits or update entitlements;
  • reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, or attempt to derive source code, except as allowed by law and except where prohibited by open-source licenses of particular components, applicable to these components only;
  • modify GetCompress except through documented settings, presets, extension APIs, or other authorised interfaces;
  • remove, hide, or alter copyright, trademark, attribution, licence, or legal notices;
  • interfere with security, licensing, licence validation, activation records, update delivery, telemetry controls, or anti-abuse systems;
  • use GetCompress to violate law, infringe rights, process unlawful content, distribute malware, evade sanctions, or harm others;
  • use GetCompress in a high-risk or safety-critical environment where failure could cause death, personal injury, environmental damage, property damage, or critical data loss; or
  • encourage or help anyone else do any of the above.

16. High-risk use

GetCompress is not designed for safety-critical, mission-critical, or high-risk use.

You must not rely on GetCompress as the sole tool or control for workflows where failure, corruption, delay, compression artefacts, metadata changes, or incorrect output could cause serious harm, legal breach, financial loss, reputational harm, safety issues, or irreversible data loss.

17. Intellectual property

Night Story and its licensors own GetCompress, including software, design, user interface, branding, documentation, compiled code, product names, logos, and related intellectual property.

You may not use Night Story names, logos, or branding except to identify GetCompress truthfully and in accordance with any brand guidelines we publish.

If you send product feedback, suggestions, bug reports, or ideas, you grant Night Story a worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable, transferable, sublicensable, royalty-free licence to use that product feedback to improve, develop, market, and operate GetCompress without compensation or obligation to you. This feedback licence does not apply to your personal data, confidential information, or media files you submit for support.

18. Third-party services and marketplaces

If you buy GetCompress through a third-party marketplace, app store, payment provider, reseller, or merchant of record, that third party may have its own terms, privacy notice, refund rules, tax handling, and support processes.

These Terms apply between you and Night Story for GetCompress, but they do not replace mandatory terms imposed by the third-party platform or payment provider.

19. Consumer rights

Nothing in these Terms limits rights that cannot be limited by law.

If you are a consumer, you may have mandatory rights under consumer protection law, including rights relating to digital content that is faulty, not as described, not of satisfactory quality, or causes damage in circumstances where the law provides a remedy.

Our 14-day no-questions-asked refund policy is offered in addition to those mandatory rights.

20. Disclaimer of warranties

GetCompress is provided with reasonable care, but software is never perfect.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, and subject to section 19, GetCompress is provided “as is” and “as available”. We do not promise that:

  • GetCompress will be error-free, uninterrupted, or immune from bugs;
  • every file, format, codec, dependency, platform, operating system, app, or service will be supported;
  • every feature, integration, workflow, format, codec, or dependency will be available on every platform, version, package format, or device;
  • outputs will meet every target size, quality expectation, platform rule, or client requirement;
  • compression will be lossless unless you choose a supported lossless workflow and verify the result;
  • metadata will always be preserved or removed exactly as expected;
  • translations or localised text will always be complete, current, or accurate;
  • replaced or custom binaries, dependencies, scripts, extensions, codecs, or tools will be secure, compatible, lawful, supported, or correct;
  • older versions will remain compatible with future systems; or
  • using GetCompress will avoid all security, privacy, legal, copyright, data-loss, or business risks.

For business users, all implied warranties, conditions, and terms are excluded to the maximum extent permitted by law.

21. Liability

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability for:

  • death or personal injury caused by negligence;
  • fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation;
  • breach of rights that cannot be excluded under applicable consumer law;
  • wilful misconduct where liability cannot be limited by law; or
  • any other liability that cannot legally be excluded or limited.

If you are a consumer, we are responsible for foreseeable loss and damage caused by our breach of these Terms or our failure to use reasonable care and skill, subject to the limits that applicable law allows. We are not responsible for business losses if you use GetCompress as a consumer, including loss of profit, revenue, business, goodwill, opportunity, contracts, or business interruption.

If you are a business user, Night Story and its directors, officers, employees, contractors, and licensors will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, punitive, or exemplary loss, or for loss of profit, revenue, sales, business, contracts, goodwill, reputation, anticipated savings, opportunity, data, files, media, content, outputs, or business interruption, even if we were told such loss might occur.

For business users, this exclusion includes loss arising from bugs, defects, crashes, failed processing, failed batch jobs, data loss, file loss, media loss, output loss, corruption, restoration costs, rework costs, missed deadlines, platform rejection, client rejection, compliance failures, metadata changes, compression artefacts, feature unavailability, platform differences, localisation errors, dependency behaviour, replaced or custom binaries, or reliance on outputs.

For business users, Night Story’s total liability arising out of or relating to GetCompress, these Terms, or any licence will not exceed the greater of: (a) the amount you paid for the relevant licence; or (b) £100.

Subject to section 19 and the non-excludable liabilities above, Night Story is not responsible for loss caused by:

  • failure to keep backups;
  • deleting originals before reviewing outputs;
  • unsupported files, corrupt files, malformed media, or third-party codec behaviour;
  • settings, presets, scripts, extensions, or automations chosen by you;
  • platform-specific feature availability, operating system limitations, package-format limitations, dependency availability, or unsupported workflows;
  • reliance on localised text where the English original was available;
  • replaced, disabled, modified, or custom executable dependencies, binaries, codecs, libraries, tools, scripts, or extensions;
  • AI assistant instructions or third-party integrations connected by you;
  • exposing local automation servers to untrusted users or networks;
  • operating system, hardware, storage, permission, or network failures;
  • third-party services, payment providers, marketplaces, or open-source components; or
  • using old versions after updates or compatibility fixes are available.

The examples above are illustrative and do not limit the other exclusions in these Terms.

22. Business user indemnity

If you use GetCompress for business, you will indemnify Night Story and its directors, officers, employees, contractors, and licensors against claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs, and expenses, including reasonable legal fees, arising from:

  • your breach of these Terms;
  • your unlawful use of GetCompress;
  • files, content, outputs, or materials you process, publish, distribute, or provide to others;
  • your extensions, scripts, automations, integrations, or connected AI assistants;
  • your infringement of third-party rights; or
  • your failure to comply with laws that apply to your business or content.

This section does not apply to consumers to the extent prohibited by consumer law.

23. Termination

You may stop using GetCompress at any time.

Night Story may suspend or terminate your licence if you materially breach these Terms, including by sharing licence keys, bypassing licensing controls, manipulating licence validation or activation records, misrepresenting activation instances, using GetCompress unlawfully, misusing refunds, infringing rights, or failing to pay amounts owed.

After termination, you must stop using GetCompress and delete paid copies in your possession, except where applicable law allows you to retain archival copies.

Sections intended to survive termination continue to apply, including sections on ownership, restrictions, disclaimers, liability, indemnity, governing law, and general terms.

24. Changes to GetCompress and these Terms

We may update GetCompress and these Terms from time to time.

The terms in force when you purchased your licence apply to that purchase, unless a change is required by law, is clearly beneficial to you, relates to a new feature or service, or you accept updated terms by renewing, upgrading, downloading an update, or continuing to use a version that requires the updated terms.

If a change materially affects your rights, and we are legally required to notify you, we will provide reasonable notice through the website, app, email, or another appropriate method.

25. Export controls and sanctions

You must comply with export control, sanctions, and trade laws that apply to you and to GetCompress.

You must not download, use, export, re-export, sell, or transfer GetCompress in breach of applicable export controls or sanctions, including to a sanctioned person, country, or entity where prohibited.

26. Assignment

You may not assign or transfer your licence or these Terms without Night Story’s prior written consent, except where applicable law gives you a right to do so.

Night Story may assign, transfer, or subcontract its rights and obligations in connection with a merger, acquisition, reorganisation, sale of assets, change of control, or to an affiliate or successor, provided this does not materially reduce your rights under these Terms.

27. Force majeure

Night Story is not responsible for delay or failure caused by events outside our reasonable control, including internet outages, hosting failures, payment provider issues, supply-chain issues, security incidents, labour disputes, war, terrorism, natural disasters, government actions, legal changes, or failures of third-party services.

28. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.

If you are a business user, the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction over disputes arising out of or relating to these Terms or GetCompress.

If you are a consumer, mandatory consumer law and court rights in your country or part of the UK may apply. Nothing in these Terms takes away mandatory rights you have under the law where you live.

29. General terms

These Terms do not create a partnership, employment relationship, agency relationship, or joint venture between you and Night Story.

If any part of these Terms is invalid or unenforceable, the rest remains in effect. The invalid or unenforceable part will be interpreted as narrowly as possible or replaced with an enforceable term that most closely matches its purpose.

Failure to enforce a term is not a waiver of that term.

Headings are for convenience only.

The English version of these Terms controls over translations, unless applicable law requires otherwise.

These Terms, the Privacy Notice, open-source notices, and your order page form the entire agreement between you and Night Story for GetCompress, unless a separate written agreement signed by Night Story applies.
